The Firm is pleased to announce that Edward P. Hudson, of Edward P. Hudson, LLC has become a Partner. Nick Stutzman and Carl Rhodes, Jr. have become Associates with the Firm. Mr. Hudson and Mr. Stutzman will continue their practice centered on residential and commercial real estate.

Alan Rothschild will join co-presenter, Richard Fox, of Philadelphia, in a 3-hour presentation at the 46th Annual Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning being held in Orlando, Florida later this month. This is the fifth time Alan has spoken at Heckerling, the annual conference hosted by the University of Miami School of Law which draws over 2,700 attendees from around the country.

Alan Rothschild was invited to speak to the Atlanta Tax Forum on November 14, 2011. His topic was “Estate Tax Turmoil: What It Means For Our Clients, What It Means For Our Practices.”

Physicians Legal Update: On October 25, 2011, Hatcher Stubbs presented its bi-annual program "Legal and Personal Issues for the Medical Professional" to an audience of 85 local physicians and dentists.

On July 14, 2011, Alan Rothschild spoke at this year’s Fiduciary Law Institute in St. Simon’s Island. Alan's topic was “Lessons From the Past: How to Maintain a Profitable and Professionally Rewarding Estate Planning Practice in the 21st Century.”
On July 28, 2011, Brad Coppedge spoke at this year’s Georgia Society of CPAs Annual Estate Planning Conference. His program was "Choice of Entity in Business and Estate Planning."
While attending the Small Business Council of America’s Annual Meeting in Florida, Morton Harris was awarded the organization’s first Chairman’s Special Appreciation Award for service to the Council. Morton served as the SBCA’s first President and Chair. The SBCA, founded in 1979, is a national nonprofit organization which represents the interests of more than 20,000 privately-held and family-owned organizations on Federal Tax, Employee Benefits and Health Care matters.
Bill Pound, who has served 3 terms with the American Red Cross West Georgia Chapter, was honored at the Chapter's Annual Meeting and Volunteer Recognition on Thursday, June 23. The event was attended by Board members, volunteers and leadership staff from the Regional Red Cross in Atlanta. During his Board term, Bill worked closely with Development Director, Mitzi Oxford, as the Development Committee Chairman. In announcing his award, Oxford explained that most people find it difficult to raise money and fundraising is outside their comfort zone. "I think his level of dedication and commitment of support speaks volumes about Bill's strength of character," she explained. In the 9 years serving on the Red Cross Board, Bill has provided leadership for a number of fundraisers which are critical to offering help for families following disasters and in supporting service to military families. Executive Director, Sharon Lyon, and Board Chair, Janet Baker, presented a special award to Bill for serving as Development Chairman.

News Anchor Barbara Gauthier and Jason Dennis facilitated the Diversity Forum live from the Patrick Theater of the Columbus Museum on Wednesday evening, January 19, 2011, addressing issues of diversity and other concerns affecting our community.
The "Town Hall" style meeting featured individual stories relating to diversity issues and how it has affected individuals in our Community. The individuals that shared their stories were:

Alan Rothschild, Jr. made a presentation to the Council on Foundations, Family Philanthropy Conference in New York City on January 24, 2011. The title of his Presentation was: How Private Foundations and Donor Advised Funds Work Together.
The Council on Foundations is a Washington, DC, area-based nonprofit membership association of some 2,100 grantmaking foundations and corporations. The assets of Council members total more than $282 billion. As the voice of philanthropy, the Council works to create an environment in which the movement can grow and thrive, and to provide Council members with the products and services they need to do their best work.
Georgia Trend magazine named its roster of Georgia’s top attorneys, selected by their peers, for the 2010 edition of the Legal Elite. Congratulations to Hatcher, Stubbs partners Robert C. Martin, Jr. and Alan F. Rothschild, Jr., who were nominated and voted to this year’s list. Robert C. Martin, Jr. was voted Legal Elite in the area of General Practice and Trial Law. Alan F. Rothschild, Jr. was voted Legal Elite in the area of Taxes/Estates and Trusts. To compile the list, Georgia Trend staff mailed ballots to a sampling of lawyers who are members of the state bar and whose practice areas correspond to those featured. The magazine’s website also posted ballots that could be downloaded and submitted electronically. Any attorney who is a member of the state bar and lives and practices in Georgia is eligible to participate in the voting and to be voted onto the Legal Elite list.Georgia Trend’s 2010 Legal Elite are listed in the December 2010 issue.
Mayor-Elect Teresa Tomlinson has appointed two partners from Hatcher-Stubbs, Melanie Slaton and Jorge Vega, to serve on the City of Columbus' Charter Review Commission. Both Melanie and Jorge are litigators, with Melanie concentrating in Employment law and Jorge handling cases involving governmental entities as well as commercial and construction litigation.
The Commission is empanelled every ten years and as part of their charge as Commission Members, Melanie and Jorge will study the Charter that went into effect in 1971 when the City of Columbus and Muscogee County governments formed Georgia's first consolidated government. The Commission may propose changes to the Charter, which will be submitted to the voters of Muscogee County for their approval.

Matt Massey joins Hatcher, Stubbs as a new Associate. A native of Columbus, Georgia, Matt obtained his B.A. in Political Science from the University of Georgia in 2006, and his law degree from Mercer University Walter F. George School of Law in 2010. Alan F. Rothschild, Jr., a partner with the law firm of Hatcher, Stubbs, Land, Hollis & Rothschild, LLP, in Columbus, Georgia, has been elected Chair of the American Bar Association’s Section of Real Property, Trust & Estate Law during its annual meeting in San Francisco. Rothschild is only the second chair from Georgia in the Section’s 85 year history.
The Section, with over 25,000 members, is the leading national forum for lawyers practicing in the estate planning and real estate fields, offering technical analysis of legal issues to federal and state legislative and administrative bodies, developing practice guidelines and conducting national educational seminars.
Rothschild, who has served in a number of American Bar Association leadership positions over the past 15 years, earned his J.D. degree from the University of Georgia School of Law and his LL.M. in Taxation from Emory University. He has practiced estate planning, taxation and general business law with Hatcher Stubbs for over 25 years. He lectures and writes frequently on estate planning, charitable giving and non-profit governance at programs and for publications sponsored by the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Georgia, various financial institutions and exempt organizations. He is past Chair of the State Bar of Georgia’s Fiduciary Law Section and has served on numerous charitable and civic boards, including The Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce, the Community Foundation of the Chattahoochee Valley and the Columbus State University Foundation.
Bill Pound, a Partner with Hatcher Stubbs, joined 70 local community and business leaders on a three day trip to Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, for the 17th Annual Inter City Leadership Conference.
The conference is held each year in different parts of the country, and is designed to explore the ways that other cities have grown and improved and how that area’s leaders have handled the growth. Robert C. Martin Jr., has become a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, one of the premier legal associations in America at an induction ceremony recently before an audience of approximately 974 persons during the 2009 annual Meeting of the College in Boston, Massachusetts.
Founded in 1950, the College is composed of the best of the trial bar from the United States and Canada. Fellowship in the College is extended by invitation only and after a careful investigation, so those experienced trial lawyers who have mastered the art of advocacy and whose professional careers have been marked by the highest standards of ethical conduct, professionalism, civility and collegiality. Lawyers must have a minimum of fifteen years trial experience before they can be considered for Fellowship.
Membership in the College cannot exceed one per cent of the total lawyer population of any state or province. There are currently approximately 5,729 members in the United States and Canada.
The College strives to improve and elevate the standards of trial practice, the administration of justice and the ethics of the trial profession. Qualified lawyers are called to Fellowship in the College from all branches of trial practice. The lawyers are carefully selected from among those who customarily represent plaintiffs in civil cases and those who customarily represent defendants, those who prosecute accused of crime and those who defend them. The College is thus able to speak with a balanced voice on important issues affecting the legal profession and the administration of justice.
Cal Martin is a partner in the firm of Hatcher, Stubbs, Land, Hollis & Rothschild, LLP and has been practicing in Columbus for 29 years. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and the University Of Georgia Lumpkin School Of Law. He focuses his practice primarily in the area of medical malpractice defense, among other types of civil litigation. Hatcher, Stubbs is one of the oldest law firms in the State of Georgia, tracing it’s roots back to 1872.

Dean Rebecca H. White, of the University of Georgia School of Law, recently visited Hatcher Stubbs to report on the school's activities, accomplishments and successes during the past year. Hatcher Stubbs' long-standing relationship with the law school is evident in its continued support of and interaction with the school and its faculty. Over half of the Firms' lawyers are graduates of Georgia Law, and two graduates of the Class of 2007 will join the Firm this fall. Class of 1985 alumnus Alan Rothschild was recently appointed to the University of Georgia School of Law Alumni Association Council.
A Harvard Law School graduate, Jorge Vega became the first assistant Attorney General for the State of Texas. He has extensive litigation experience in both Texas and Washington. In addition to his litigation practice, Jorge handled a variety of municipal matters as the Planning Director for the City of Bellingham, Washington for three years. Jorge has been a participant in several local forums on various constitutional law topics. He joins the litigation and administrative law practice groups.
