Hatcher, Stubbs Ranked 2011-2012 "Best Law Firm" by U.S. News Media Group and Best Lawyers
Hatcher Stubbs announced that the Firm has been ranked a 2011-2012 “Best Law Firm” by U.S. News Media Group and Best Lawyers, marking the second edition of this annual analysis. Hatcher Stubbs received first-tier rankings in four practice areas.
“U.S. News has more than two decades of experience in providing the public with the most accurate and in-depth rankings of a wide range of institutions, including our Best Law School rankings,” says Tim Smart, Executive Editor of U.S. News & World Report. “Law firms are an integral part of our rankings and a natural accompaniment to the law school rankings.”

These rankings, which are presented in tiers, showcase 9,633 different law firms ranked in one or more of 119 major practice areas. Georgia Trend conducts this analysis annually through a peer-review process which recognizes Georgia’s top attorneys in eight different categories. Alan Rothschild was named to the list of Elites for his expertise in the area of Taxes, Estates & Trusts. Carter Schondelmayer was selected for her expertise in the area of Labor & Employment law. Alan Rothschild was invited to speak to the Atlanta Tax Forum on November 14, 2011. His topic was “Estate Tax Turmoil: What It Means For Our Clients, What It Means For Our Practices.”
The Atlanta Tax Forum, Inc. was founded for the purpose of providing continuing education for its members in all areas of federal and state taxation and to foster the professional association of tax lawyers and tax accountants. The Atlanta Tax Forum is the oldest organization in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area devoted exclusively to the education of lawyers and certified public accountants who specialize in taxation.
Physicians Legal Update: On October 25, 2011, Hatcher Stubbs presented its bi-annual program "Legal and Personal Issues for the Medical Professional" to an audience of 85 local physicians and dentists.
This year’s presentations were: Employment Law Issues and Non-Competes, Carter P. Schondelmayer; Avoiding Malpractice Claims-A Lawyer's Perspective, Robert C. On July 14, 2011, Alan Rothschild spoke at this year’s Fiduciary Law Institute in St. Simon’s Island. Alan's topic was “Lessons From the Past: How to Maintain a Profitable and Professionally Rewarding Estate Planning Practice in the 21st Century.”
On July 28, 2011, Brad Coppedge spoke at this year’s Georgia Society of CPAs Annual Estate Planning Conference. His program was "Choice of Entity in Business and Estate Planning."
While attending the Small Business Council of America’s Annual Meeting in Florida, Morton Harris was awarded the organization’s first Chairman’s Special Appreciation Award for service to the Council. Morton served as the SBCA’s first President and Chair. The SBCA, founded in 1979, is a national nonprofit organization which represents the interests of more than 20,000 privately-held and family-owned organizations on Federal Tax, Employee Benefits and Health Care matters.
Bill Pound, who has served 3 terms with the American Red Cross West Georgia Chapter, was honored at the Chapter's Annual Meeting and Volunteer Recognition on Thursday, June 23. The event was attended by Board members, volunteers and leadership staff from the Regional Red Cross in Atlanta. During his Board term, Bill worked closely with Development Director, Mitzi Oxford, as the Development Committee Chairman. In announcing his award, Oxford explained that most people find it difficult to raise money and fundraising is outside their comfort zone. "I think his level of dedication and commitment of support speaks volumes about Bill's strength of character," she explained. In the 9 years serving on the Red Cross Board, Bill has provided leadership for a number of fundraisers which are critical to offering help for families following disasters and in supporting service to military families. Executive Director, Sharon Lyon, and Board Chair, Janet Baker, presented a special award to Bill for serving as Development Chairman.
On June 10, 2011, John Sheftall spoke at this year’s Georgia Federal Tax Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. His program was "Post Mortem Planning with Disclaimers."
Hatcher Stubbs is pleased to announce our summer interns for 2011. The program is designed for 1st and 2nd year law students and seeks to mirror the experience of a first year associate as much as possible. It affords the student and the Firm the opportunity to learn about each other during a six or twelve week program.
William A. Alexander is a 2008 graduate of The University of Georgia with a major in Psychology. William is a second year law student at Georgia State University College of Law. He is from Atlanta, Georgia.
Ben Carter is a 2010 graduate of Auburn University with a major in Accounting. Ben is a first year law student at the University of Georgia School of Law. He is from Phenix City, Alabama.
Barclay S. Hendrix is a 2010 graduate of The University of Georgia with majors in Political Science and Economics. Barclay is a first year law student at The University of Georgia School of Law. She is from Columbus, Georgia.

Alan F. Rothschild, Jr. has been selected to receive the Willamette Management Associates 2010 Standard of Excellence Citation award for his article entitled "The ‘Slow Evolution’ of the Estate Planning Profession.” The article was published in the 2010 Autumn Issue of Insights.
Each year Willamette Management Associates' Standard of Excellence selection committee selects articles that contribute to the advancement of current topics associated with financial advisory services professional disciplines, lost profits/economic damages analysis and business/IP valuation. The committee reviews articles and selects award recipients based on 10 criteria that range from originality and technical quality to depth, usefulness and interest.

Ms. Sillitto’s practice combines general litigation with a focus on the representation of educational entities. Ms. Sillitto has been an Associate with the Firm since 2004, and has worked with the Firm’s education law practice group on education law cases at the state and federal level. Sarah received her B.A. in English, cum laude, from the University of Georgia, and her J.D. from the University of Georgia School of Law, cum laude.

News Anchor Barbara Gauthier and Jason Dennis facilitated the Diversity Forum live from the Patrick Theater of the Columbus Museum on Wednesday evening, January 19, 2011, addressing issues of diversity and other concerns affecting our community.
The "Town Hall" style meeting featured individual stories relating to diversity issues and how it has affected individuals in our Community. The individuals that shared their stories were:

Alan Rothschild, Jr. made a presentation to the Council on Foundations, Family Philanthropy Conference in New York City on January 24, 2011. The title of his Presentation was: How Private Foundations and Donor Advised Funds Work Together.
The Council on Foundations is a Washington, DC, area-based nonprofit membership association of some 2,100 grantmaking foundations and corporations. The assets of Council members total more than $282 billion. As the voice of philanthropy, the Council works to create an environment in which the movement can grow and thrive, and to provide Council members with the products and services they need to do their best work.
